(a) Says the Catechism (Commentaries): —
“It is from the material Worlds that descend they, who fashion physical man at
the new Manvantaras. They are inferior Lha (Spirits), possessed of a dual body
(an astral within an ethereal form). They are the fashioners and creators of our
body of illusion.” . . . .

the night fires and the day fires (a). They dried out the turbid dark waters.
With their heat they quenched them. The Lhas (Spirits) of the high; The lhamayin
(those) of below, came (b). They slew the forms, which were two- and four-faced.
They fought the goat-men, and the dog-headed men, and the men with fishes’
bodies.
(a) The “Flames” are a Hierarchy of Spirits parallel to, if not identical with,
the “burning” fiery Saraph (Seraphim) mentioned by Isaiah (vi. 2-6), those who
attend, according to Hebrew Theogony, “the Throne of the Almighty.” Melha is the
Lord of the “Flames.” When he appears on Earth, he assumes the personality of a
Buddha, says a popular legend. He is one of the most ancient and revered Lhas, a
Buddhist St. Michael.
(b) The word “Below” must not be taken to mean infernal regions, but simply a
spiritual, or rather ethereal, Being of a lower grade, because nearer to the
Earth, or one step higher than our terrestrial sphere; while the Lhas are
Spirits of the highest Spheres — whence the name of the capital of Tibet,
Lha-ssa.
Besides a statement of a purely physical nature and belonging to the

evolution of life on Earth, there may be another allegorical meaning attached to
this Sloka, or indeed, as is taught, several. The flames, or “Fires,” represent
Spirit, or the male element, and “Water,” matter, or the opposite element. And
here again we find, in the action of the Spirit slaying the purely material
form, a reference to the eternal struggle, on the physical and psychic planes,
between Spirit and Matter, besides a scientific cosmic fact. For, as said in the
next verse:

cả. Chân lư lộ nguyên h́nh và nghiêm nghị ngó ngay mặt con. Nó nói:
190. V́ ḷng thương ḿnh mà hưởng những quả An Nghỉ và Giải Thoát cũng có ngọt
ngào đôi chút, nhưng những quả của nghĩa vụ lâu dài và cay đắng, của hy sinh v́
ḷng thương kẻ khác, v́ ḷng thương anh em đồng loại đau khổ, c̣n ngọt ngào hơn
nữa.”
191. Vị Độc Giác Phật (38) vâng lời bản ngă. Vị Bồ Tát đă chiến thắng, đă nắm
phần thưởng trong tay nhưng v́ ḷng từ bi vô lượng mà nói:
192. “V́ ḷng thương người tôi xin nhường phần thưởng to tát này lại”. Ngài làm
tṛn đại nguyện Từ Bỏ.
193. Ngài là một Đấng Cứu Thế.
194. Con hăy xem ! Mục đích của chân phúc và Con Đường Đau Khổ dài đằng đẳng ở
chốn xa xăm kia. Trong hai con đường con có thể chọn một, hỡi kẻ có chí nguyện
chịu buồn thảm, trong những chu kỳ sẽ tới.

196. “Bạch Sư Phụ (Upàdhya) (1) ư con đă quyết, con khao khát sự Minh Triết. Bây
giờ Sư Phụ đă xé tan bức màn che trước con Đường Bí Mật và dạy Pháp đại thừa
Yana (2). Con nguyện một ḷng vâng theo lời Sư Phụ chỉ dạy”.
Bạch Sư Phụ, con đă nhất quyết, con khao khát sự minh triết. Bây giờ Sư Phụ đă
xé tan bức màn che trước con đường bí mật và dạy pháp đại thừa Yana. Con nguyện
sẵn sàng vâng theo lời Sư Phụ chỉ dạy.
C. W. L. Theo một cước chú th́ chữ Acharya có nghĩa là bậc Huấn Sư về tinh thần
hay vị Đạo Sư. Theo sự giải thích ở đó: những vị Phật tử Bắc Tông thường chọn
các bậc Huấn Sư nầy trong các nhân vật thánh thiện tinh thông về khoa
Gotrabhu-jnana. Vị Gotrabhu là người đă sẵn sàng nhận một cuộc Điểm Đạo nào đó
và người tiêu biểu cho tất cả những đức tánh cần thiết, chỉ c̣n chờ được phép
tŕnh diện. Gotrabhu-jnana là sự hiểu biết về các đức tánh ấy. Các vị Chơn Sư -
Chơn Tiên thu nhận đệ tử hay đệ tử tập sự - là những người có kiến thức ấy.
Chúng ta đă đề cập đến danh từ Yana trong Chương I.
